The Master, the Demoness, and Fertility

Just imagine strolling through rice fields, cool breeze, and mountains full of trees and colorful flowers – the sheer beauty of these are mesmerizing. Imagine going to a place where a person spends months at a time painting Buddhist art, art that has a certificate of authenticity. A place so majestic you can feel the authenticity in the air…

Chimi Lhakhang also known as the Fertility temple is a Buddhist Monastery located in the District of Punakha, is such a place. While walking to this temple you go through rows and rows of rice fields, and just feel peaceful as you look around. The story of this temple is quite interesting. The area around the land where the temple was built was being haunted by a demoness. All the villagers were afraid so whenever night fell they would seek shelter. A Buddhist Master, “Lam Orukpa Kelenlep,” also known as “the Divine Madman,” didn’t fear this demoness; instead he looked for her and found her. He chased her through the valley, fought and subdued her. The spot where this occurred is the site of the temple. This temple is visited by people who have difficulty conceiving because there are accounts of people being able to conceive after going and praying to The Divine Madman. There is an actual album filled with pictures and stories of people thanking the Divine Madman for their children. However, don’t think you will become fertile just because you’ve stepped into the Temple because that would be quite ignorant. People come here to pray for blessings. In a mystical place like Bhutan, things happen or may happen that may not always need explanations. That’s the magic of the place!
